A Locator is a data entry field which is used to rapidly find a specific row in the displayed List Box based on the contents of a specific field.

The locator field uses the "Incremental" methodolgy for finding the data. That is, if you type an 'A', it goes to the first instance of 'A' in the left of the active data column. If you then type 'C', it will go the nearest match of "AC' in the left of the active data column., and so on. If a match is not found, it will highlight the entry just below where the entry would have been found if it existed. Whatever you type will be displayed in the data-entry portion of the locator field. If the locator field is highlighted in Yellow, you will need to press the Tab key to start the locating process. If the List Box is highlighted in Yellow, all you need to do is to start typing and the locator will work as described.

There are two types of Locator fields - Fixed and Multiple:

Fixed: This locator field will have a prompt name other than "Locate:". It will ONLY locate using the column which has the same name as the prompt.

Mutiple: This field will have "Locate:" as its prompt. In this case, you just place the cursor on the title of the column that you wish to use as the locator field and click the left mouse button. The List Box will then re-display in sorted order by the column you have selected and a [+] sign will appear after this column indicating that this field is now displayed in ascending sort order and the locator will work on this field. If you click a second time, a [-] will appear and the the sort order will be reversed to descending order. If the [+] or [-] does not appear after the column heading name, then this field is not active as a locator field.
